Asus Transformer Prime

Not only is the Asus Transformer prime the world’s first quadcore tablet, it’s also a natty hybrid with a removable keyboard that snaps into place like a jigsaw piece. The slate itself is only slightly heavier than the iPad 2 and measures just 8.3mm thick – impressive considering the roaring 1.3GHz quadcore processor on board. Dock with the keyboard and an extra 10.3 mm is added, making the Prime more netbook like in size.

Despite the tight layout of the QWERTY and trackpad, it is still preferable to a touchscreen for lengthier typing excursions and PC-like gaming with titles streamed using OnLive.
The generous 32GB storage is bolstered by a USB 2.0 port and SD card slot, plus a year’s free Asus cloud storage. Other connections include micro HDMI and a headphone jack. Like the original Transformer, the Prime features a 10.1 inch 1280x800 touchscreen protected by tough Gorilla glass.

It arrives running Honeycomb, but an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade is available now.
The dock grants an 18-hour life: 12 hours if the tablet flies solo, and you cannot charge via USB.
Unlike Asus’ original Transformer, the Prime isn’t cheaper than the equivalent iPad.

However, with quadcore speed, an ace screen and the option of plugging in the keyboard for more comfortable typing and longer life, it may not feel overpriced after all.
