Android 4.2 Jelly Bean

Forget Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and put Ice Cream Sandwich far out of mind -- the latest edition of Google's mobile operating system is officially Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, and it's arriving with a slew of tricks up its sleeves.

Multiple users

Ideal if you own an Android tablet -- Android 4.2 introduces multiple users, so you can have different profiles, homescreens, backgrounds and app selections for different people. You can switch between user profiles without having to log out and back in.
This feature is something iPad owners have been crying out for, so it's interesting to see Android get the jump on Apple. It's only going to be available on tablets for now.

At The Moment Microsoft Surface Is Hot!!

Love it or hate it, there was a ton of consumer interest in Microsoft's Surface tablet at a store in Los Angeles on Friday.

CENTURY CITY, Calif.--As of this weekend, Microsoft has a hot product on its hands.
Reviews notwithstanding (some have been pretty negative), on Friday my local Microsoft store in Century City (in Los Angeles) was buzzing with curious customers keen on trying the Surface RT tablet, as lines snaked outside. Other stores drew crowds too.
(And all three Surface models are back-ordered three weeks on Microsoft's online store.)
We were surprised to see any line at all. After reading some reviews, you would have thought that the thing was DOA.

Windows 8: A Steep Learning Curve

Microsoft's vision for the future of computers builds a new world for Windows. It works well with a mouse and keyboard, and it's great with touch screens. It lusts for apps, lives for sync, and loves real-time updates. But you'd better believe it'll take some time to get used to it all.
Since Microsoft debuted its vision for Windows 8 to the world at its Build 2011 conference, we have watched the themes that drive Windows 8 slowly gestate. The new operating system applies the lessons of mobile to the personal computer in a way that's absolutely innovative. Connectivity, cloud access to personal files, seamless updates, and a simple interface all come together in Windows 8.

What is Windows RT (FAQ)

While Microsoft has made a point of cutting down on the number of Windows 8 versions available when compared with previous Windows releases, the company is also making a feature-limited Windows 8 version to run on ARM processors called Windows RT. Windows RT is more like Microsoft's attempt to do a Windows version of Apple's locked-down iOS than anything else.

Microsoft RT Surface Tablet

Microsoft Surface is the best productivity tablet yet, and it had better be. As the only Microsoft-branded Windows RT hardware to launch with the new operating system (Windows 8 launches this week as well), the tablet serves as ambassador and flagship for the touch-focused, wildly risky Windows grand experiment. The Surface excels thanks to its thoughtful design, sensible implementation of its keyboard accessory, and the innovations brought about by the interface formerly known as "Metro"-- chief among them: the gesture-driven menu system, powerful search tool, and incredibly cool and versatile split-screen feature.

Apple iPad Mini Vs iPad 3

Apple iPad Mini
iPad Mini vs iPad – fight
Apple‘s iPad in its four iterations has sat atop the tablet food chain with little in the way of competition. Now there’s another soldier in the iPad army in the form of a smaller, more portable sibling known as the iPad Mini, a slate tablet most comparable with Google‘s Nexus 7. With what seems like only a size difference between the competitors, we decide to find winner.

Medal of Honor: War Fighter

medal of honor warfighter 2
Medal of Honor Warfighter is shaping up to be the long-running series’ best entry in a long time. Using Battlefield 3’s fantastic Frostbite 2 engine and with a plot direct from the brains of real life special forces troops, it aims to bring a little more realism to the over-stocked world of military first-person shooters.
And yesterday we had a chance to get some extensive hands-on time with the game’s single player campaign, playing through a pair of very different missions in the PC version of the game (which, if you’re interested, we opted to play with an Xbox 360 pad rather than the keyboard-and-mouse combo).

LG Nexus 4 Star on Google's 29 October Event

Google has issued invites to a shindig at the end of the month, where the search giant is expected to reveal the latest Nexus phone -- the hotly tipped LG Nexus 4.
The New York-based event, which kicks off at 10am (2pm UK time), on 29 October, has an invite that shows a colourful Big Apple skyline and the text, "The playground is open" enclosed within a Google search box.
The event will take place mere hours ahead of the Windows Phone 8 launch, in what's likely a brazen attempt to purloin Microsoft's thunder, or a ploy to kill off technology journalists by forcing them to type themselves to death.
While Google could be revealing anything in theory, it's reckoned that the bash will centre on Android, including news on updates to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and -- possibly -- a glimpse at one or more new devices.
A bevy of smart phone leaks in recent weeks puts LG's rumoured Nexus phone at the top of the likely-list for Google's hoe-down, not least because it's already been tipped to arrive on the exact date of Google's event.
Pictured extensively in leaked snaps, the so-called Nexus 4 is all but certain to pack a quad-core processor, a 4.7-inch 768x1,280-pixel display and 2GB of RAM.
An 8-megapixel camera is also tipped, but it doesn't look like this mobile will feature a microSD card slot, which would be bad news.
It's expected to run Android 4.2 which, as leaked software suggests, will have at least one intriguing new feature -- a double-swipe notification bar that will play host to something called 'Quick Settings'.
If you also want to keep up with the action live, the big G will be streaming the event via youtube.com/android.

iPad Mini Coming!!

Apple sent out an invitation to members of the press Tuesday for an event on Oct. 23. The company is widely expected to announce a smaller, cheaper tablet computer that the industry has dubbed the iPad Mini.

CNET confirms that the event is to be held at the California Theater in San Jose, Calif. The invitation is further indication that Apple may introduce a 7.85-inch iPad.
Reuters also reported Monday that Apple will hold an event on Oct. 23, where the tech giant will introduce a smaller tablet computer. Apple is also rumored to unveil a 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display.
The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Apple has placed an order for 10 million units of the iPad Mini to component suppliers in Asia. The Journal also said that production has already started on the device.
Several alleged prototypes of the iPad Mini have circulated around the Internet, including a recent set of photos posted on Twitter and Instagram by 9to5Mac researcher Sonny Dickson.

Mercedes SL Interior Repurposed Into Office Furniture

Mercedes-Benz SL furniture
There is automotive furniture and then there is Mercedes-Benz automotive furniture. The Stuttgart based luxury automaker Mercedes-Benz’s expertise in design and aesthetics goes beyond the realms of car interiors, which has been made obvious with its foray into the furniture business. The German automaker furniture line in collaboration the luxury furnishings company Formitalia launched at Milan furniture fair earlier this year, draws inspiration from the styling of Mercedes-Benz classic cars. The stellar collection featuring sofas, dining tables, home theater systems and beds crafted out of materials like aluminum, glass and wood used in automotive design was completely targeted at bringing the classic elegance to home aesthetics. And now the brand wants to appeal to the wealthy automotive fanatics like the Brazilian billionaire Eike Batista, whose Jardim Botanico mansion in Rio de Janeiro has a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren displayed as a showpiece. This time around, Mercedes has collaborated with South African designer Katie Thompson, known for her recycled furniture. The designer known for repurposing junk into treasure with her sophisticated styling and design expertise, has picked seven individual components of Mercedes-Benz SL to recreate furniture and furnishings for the office.

L.A. Samsung Series 9 Review

When Samsung first released its Series 9 ultra-portable laptop last year, we were blown away by the power it generated from such a slim body. With the rise of the ultrabook though, more and more companies have been able to offer similar products for less money, meaning that when Samsung launched its pricey update earlier this year, I wasn't bowled over.
Not wanting to fade into the shadows, Samsung has ripped out the old processor and replaced it with one of Intel's latest line of Ivy Bridge chips. That's a big wallop of extra power for the same price as the previous model.
At 15 inches, it's bigger than the majority of ultrabooks, but it's still slimmer than most. It might be the ideal travelling companion if you demand a little more oomph from your laptop.
My Series 9 900X4C review model came with an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and a 128GB solid state drive. It can be bought now for £1,200.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Review

The first Samsung Galaxy Note quickly split opinion among phone fans, with many -- including us -- arguing that its 5.3-inch screen was just ridiculous. Others, however, were delighted at the extra screen space for movies, photos and web browsing and the gigantophone was a surprise hit.
Samsung is back to stretch our pockets again with the Galaxy Note 2. It's an even bigger 5.5-inch monster that offers the handy S Pen stylus, a wealth of built-in software and the latest Android Jelly Bean operating system.
With a blisteringly powerful quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM under the hood, is the Note 2 the ultimate mobile device or is it still just too big?

Toshiba Satellite L87-10G Review

Toshiba Satellite L875-10G front
Some laptops are designed to be super-thin portable machines that you can carry anywhere, while others are enormous things that belong at home. The Toshiba Satellite L875-10G is one of the latter.
It's a 17.3-inch machine packing an Intel Core i5 processor, an impressive 8GB of RAM and a dedicated AMD Radeon graphics card. It's just begging to be your bedroom media pal, and with a very reasonable price of only £680, it might not be a bad idea to take it up on that offer.

Sony Vaio E Series 17 review

Sony Vaio E Series 17 front
If watching movies in bed or on your sofa is your thing, a 17-inch laptop could be your perfect companion. Sony's new E Series is such a machine, offering a Full HD screen and a Blu-ray player to get the most from your films.
My review model came with an Intel Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM and an AMD Radeon HD 7650M graphics card, for which you'd pay £870 from Laptops Direct.
Alternatively, head over to the Sony store and you can select lesser options of nearly all the components, bringing the price down to £490 for the base model, but you won't get anything like the same performance.

Get The Best Wi-Fi Signal

If it wasn't for the convenience of surfing the web in front of the TV while sat in your underpants, the disconnections, poor transfer rates and security issues associated with wireless networking wouldn't make it worth the headache. Only a few years ago, some laptops running Vista point blank refused to connect to Wi-Fi, belching 'unidentified network' errors like fizzy pop-loving children.

Print Documents to Any Printer With Your iPhone

When Apple unveiled AirPrint, it did more than simply announce a new driver. It made the iPad and iPhone viable standalone business devices on which you could edit, create and print out hard copies of your work... so long as you'd bought from HP.
AirPrint is still -- officially -- only compatible with recent HP printers, but with a bit of tweaking and a little help from some free utilities, we'll show you how you can get your iPad and iPhone talking to any printer you care to name.

Play Android Games With Your PS3 Controller

As any self-respecting gamer will tell you, physical controls always trump touchscreen interfaces when it comes to fast-paced, demanding titles. Seasoned thumb-bandits may also be aware that Google's Android platform is a hotbed of retro emulation goodness, with apps available that turn your humble handset into everything from a NES to a Sega Mega Drive.

Locating YourLost/Stolen Mac

Warning message
Apple's Find My iPhone service has long been a feature of MobileMe. So long as you have push email enabled on a MobileMe address, this service pings the handset, retrieving its location from the internal GPS chip and plotting it on a Google Map.
Should your iPhone be stolen, you can then send a message to its screen, or lock or wipe the handset and prevent anyone from getting hold of your sensitive data. Sadly, it doesn't go so far as allowing you to disable it entirely, to prevent it being sold on.
With MobileMe being retired in favour of iCloud, Apple has now rolled out a similar retrieval service for the Mac, Find My Mac. While none of Apple's current laptops feature 3G, it's a relatively trivial matter to plot a user's position from their IP address, so, as long as whoever has your Mac is online, finding them should be easy. Watch our video tutorial above, or read on to find out how to use Find My Mac.

Access Hidden iPhone Features

Clever homebrew hackers have unearthed a couple of hidden iPhone features which were never switched on by Apple.
One is an Android-style autocorrect bar which displays word suggestions above the keyboard, and the other turns your iPhone into a sweeping panoramic camera.
Best of all, you needn't go near any risky jailbreak tools to reveal these features. Hit play on the video above or read on and our guide will show you how, but bear in mind Apple left them out for a reason.
The panoramic camera is worth trying, but doesn't quite match the flawless experience seen elsewhere on iOS, and the new autocorrect might interrupt your well-honed typing speed. Of course, you can always switch them off if you change your mind.

Whether photography is a hobby or a profession, you'll get a whole lot more out of it if you understand how it works. Make Free iPhone Ringtones

You might be surprised to hear that ringtones earned the music business almost half of its income from mobile phones in 2010, according to Midem. That's nearly £4bn that phone-wagging noise polluters handed over worldwide -- more than mobile music sales and streaming combined!
Well, the industry's going to earn a few pennies less because we're about to arm Techy Gadgetz readers with the knowledge to make their own ringtones for free. It only takes a few minutes and you'll never have to pay for a ringtone again, so read on to find out how. This guide is only for iPhone owners with access to GarageBand on a Mac, but revolutions usually start small...

50 Useful Twitter Tips

Twitter is a social network where you have 140 characters at a time to say something to the world. If you're not all that familiar with Twitter, you probably think people only use it to mention what they had for lunch. That is, utterly pointless.
Twitter is far more than that. Used correctly, it can be a powerful way of spreading news and making contacts.
This list of tips is designed to offer something for everyone, regardless of their experience. If you're just starting and don't understand the basic terms, we have it covered. Similarly, if you've been on Twitter for years and think you know everything, you might learn a few new tricks.

Change Your Amazon Kindle ScreenSaver

http://www.TechyGadgetz.com
Those with an Amazon Kindle will be familiar with the selection of creepy E-Ink renderings on its screensaver. Doze off while reading and you'll awake to any number of horrors, from the moustachioed countenance of Mark Twain to an ichthyophobic's nightmare.
While the Kindle ordinarily won't let you change the screensaver images, some simple jiggery-pokery will allow you to 'jailbreak' your device and customise it (jailbreaking being the process of overcoming the limitations imposed by the gadget's manufacturer). Here's how.

Backup Your Files On Multiple Cloud Storage Services

You may use a number of cloud storage services like Dropbox, SkyDrive or Google Drive to backup your files online and access them away from home. The problem is, they (usually) ask you to store your files in the service's own folder on your computer -- not, say, your regular Documents folder where you'd normally keep everything. So if you want to access your spreadsheets on more than one cloud service, you can't. This guide will show you how to get around this.

40 Ways To Fix Your PC

If you know what a USB port looks like, chances are you're regularly called upon as the 'IT expert' by friends and family whenever a computer goes bust or a window mysteriously disappears.
Below are some of the most useful tips I've gathered over many years of troubleshooting PCs and despairing at the number of browser toolbars unsuspecting pensioners install. And no, I'm not going to come around to "take a look". Work your way through all of these first...

Trim Your SIM To iPhone 5 Nano SIM Size

http://www.TechyGadgetz.com
If you're lucky enough to have bagged an iPhone 5 and are wondering how to squeeze your current SIM card or micro-SIM into that teeny-tiny slot, then you'll need artistic precision and the slicey dicey skills you picked up in biology class, as well as a head for geometry.
We took this exam, passed with flying colours and will show my workings out below (for you to copy, because we're friends, right?).
Since the nano-SIM is not only smaller than a standard SIM but also 12 per cent thinner, there was some debate as to whether you'd be able to go all Edward Scissorhands on your current chip, in the same way you could to create a micro-SIM. The proactive chaps over at network GiffGaff gave it a shot though, and discovered that the iPhone 5 tray is perfectly capable of handling a SIM of standard girth.
It may be the case that future phones requiring a nano-SIM may not have left room for these extra millimetres though, thanks to our discovery we can now show you how to painstakingly sand your SIM down to size.

How To Set Up an Android Tablet As A Second Display

If you own an Android tablet, why not put it to work as your secondary screen? Follow this handy guide and all those windows piled up on your display will finally see the light of day.
